Building the Future Through Education
We have made progress -- with funding and support we will succeed.
Upon the return of Bishop Andudu to the Nuba following his trip to the U.S., efforts began in earnest for the rebuilding of education. Many schools had been destroyed. Thousands of children were without education, and had received no schooling through much of the civil war. There was no high school in the Nuba. The nearest high schools are in Kaji Kaji, Yei, and Rumbek in the South, in SPLA/M controlled areas. They are a long distance away, and a cause for great hardship for a family to send their children.
The people of the Nuba came together from many different groups to address the education needs of their people. Leaders from the following groups assembled, The SPLA leaders in the Nuba Mountains, the Nuba Mountain Relief and Rehabilitation and Development Organization (NRROD), and the religious community, Anglican, Church of Christ, Evangelical, Orthodox (Coptic), Roman Catholic, and Islamic Religion.
The Commander of the SPLA leaders donated the land for the High School. School boards for the various schools were organized. One of the primary schools, which had been run by a local community, had no funds to reopen it. Bishop Andudu was asked if he could do this. This has become the ECS Hope Primary School. Both the High School and ECS Hope Primary opened for classes October 1, 2004, thanks to the help that has been made available from our donors and the people of the Nuba.
